Critical Digital Literacy: towards agency for learning through open educational practices
(1.9.2023-31.8.2026)

The digital transformation progressively implies the emergence of more questions related to the complex relationships between technology and society that require a citizenry prepared to critically question these aspects and to act in a thoughtful and coherent manner, both individually and socially, in an increasingly digital world.

Artificial intelligence, data analytics, intellectual property, etc. pose a certain ethical complexity where addressing the relationship between technology and society in a critical and socially committed way highlights the importance of promoting agency among citizens. It is a matter of taking a step beyond the instrumental digital competence and addressing the critical digital competence, and from it the digital agency, which involves developing a committed citizenship that is able to learn permanently and direct their own learning, through skills that allow them to adapt and change their environment and positively influence their work and personal context.

Therefore, this project aims to develop critical digital competence through open educational practices that support and actively promote the agency for learning of higher education students, the future professionals, based on the conviction that this should be a priority area of intervention for the promotion of this agency.

Thus, this project aims at two fundamental directions: (1) critical digital competence, which integrates as fundamental elements, online identity, data competence and algorithmic competence; (2) open educational practices, framed in the open education movement, which are considered key for the promotion of the digital university, and facilitators to foster the development of critical digital competencies.

Design, implement and validate a pedagogical reference framework for the development of open educational practices for Higher Education that contribute to the development of students’ critical digital competence by explicitly promoting the exercise of agency for learning.

SO1. Establish the bases of critical digital competence for agency for learning and its connection with open education in higher education, as well as its current situation in the Spanish university system.

SO2. Design, develop, implement and evaluate open educational practices that work on critical digital competence for agency in higher education.

SO3. Create and validate design instruments based on the evidence obtained from the implemented practices that allow promoting the development of agency through critical digital competence in university education contexts.
